Why is this tongue cleaning so important and central to an Ayurvedic morning routine? When Agni is weak and digestion isn’t working properly, the body accumulates ama, a thick, sticky substance of undigested food, bacteria, and metabolic waste. During the night, some of those toxins are deposited on our tongue, which manifest as a white, yellow, or brown coating on the tongue. Reabsorbing this coating into the body by swallowing can cause ama to clog the channels (shrotas) and become a precursor to disease, digestive problems, bad breath (halitosis), and a weakened immune system.
Ayurveda tends to favor the use of a copper tongue scraper over plastic or stainless steel because it’s resistant to bacteria and provides enzymes to support healthy microbes in the mouth.
